Article Structured Data: Keep the Metadata Honest

Structured data can help describe a business article, but it is not a substitute for the article itself. The useful starting point is a clear page with a visible title, identifiable publisher, and relevant content. Its machine-readable description should tell the same story.

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Article structured data describes the content already present on a page. Use accurate titles, author information, representative images, and appropriate dates; markup should not invent evidence or promise a special search appearance.

Represent the actual article

Match the headline and description to the visible subject. Choose an image that helps explain that subject rather than a logo used for every article. Keep the article's page URL consistent with the intended canonical address and with the links that bring readers to it.

Use attribution and dates responsibly

Name the real publishing organisation or author that the business chooses to present. Do not manufacture an expert reviewer or backdate an unpublished draft. If publication and modification dates are used, they should reflect the actual editorial history rather than a desire to make the page appear newer.

Validate content as well as syntax

A JSON document can parse successfully while describing the wrong page. Check its values, image URL, language, and relationship to visible content. Use suitable validation tools after deployment, then review again when the template or article metadata changes.

An illustrative business scenario

An article explaining website migration should use its own migration diagram and headline. Copying the metadata from a pricing article may produce valid JSON but an inconsistent description of the published page.

A practical checklist

  • Match the visible headline and metadata.
  • Use relevant, accessible image URLs.
  • Avoid invented authors and dates.
  • Validate the live page after publishing.

Questions about this topic

Does Article markup guarantee a rich result?

No. It describes the content; display decisions remain with the search service and depend on its requirements and evaluation.

Should business guides use NewsArticle?

Choose a type that fits the actual content. An evergreen business guide is not automatically a news report because it has a date.
